News and Rumours, June 28,2010

Lots going on around the league right now heading into July 1st..

BUF- Going after D-Men.. could target Kubina and Martin
MTL- Might consider getting rid of Hamrlik anda trying to get into the Volchenkov sweepstakes
PHI- Have permission to talk to Nabokov and Turco.
TOR- Getting close to a deal that would land them Marc Savard (BOS), Kings are also in on Savard as they try to land Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk/Savard combo would be deadly once again...
WSH- Will consider going after Willie Mitchell once he gets cleared to play, this should happen shortly.
VAN- In on Volchenkov sweepstakes as well are the front runners to land Dan Hamhuis.
PIT/TOR- Looking into Colby Armstrong, Pens leading the way
COL- Avs putting together offers for Ray Whitney and/or Matt Cullen
MTL- Marty Biron might be sought after to back up Carey Price.
CAL- Flames trying to get Matthew Lombardi back (glad they realized they messed up getting rid of him)
TMP- Chris Mason looks like the guy the Lightning will go after.

VAN- Rumour has Scott Niedermeyer considering joining the Nucks next season
CHI- With winning the Conn Smyth trophy for playoff MVP, Jon Toews will receive a $1.3 million bonus. This bonus will be a cap hit next year and will hurt the Hawks chances of signing everyone. Toews is also the youngest member of the Triple Gold Club which has 24 members. Toews will also be a presenter at this years MMVA awards in Toronto.
SJS- Rob Blake has announced his retirement after 21 seasons in the NHL
WAS- Ted Leonsis, owner of the Capitals has purchased the NBA's Washington Wizards as well as the Verizon Centre. His company, Monumental Sports & Entertainment now has an asset base of $825 million.
ANA- Paul Kariya may come back to the Ducks if Temmu Selanne stays.
ANA- Saku Koivu will likely sign elsewhere, two teams rumoured are the Wild and the Canadiens.
OTT- Likely to buy out the contract of Jonathan Cheechoo
NJD- Devils making a strong push for Tomas Kaberles services.

Best Studio Show: NHL On The Fly, NHL Network.

The best team won the cup in my opinion. Congrats to the Blackhawks for reviving hockey in Chicago. J Toews, great choice for Conn Smyth.

DET- Nick Lidstrom will be the honorary pace car driver at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race this weekend at Michican International Speedway.
PHX- City of Glendale has voted unanimously Tuesday to approve Ice Edge Holdings to gain rights to a new lease, which would keep the team in Phoenix,
BUF- Sabres management has stopped talks with prospect Zach Kassian after he was charged with assault for punching a man at a bar in Windsor, ON.
TBL- Have named Pat Verbeek a scout.
TBL- GM Steve Yzerman will be looking to bolster the Lightnings goaltending. They are interested in either of the Habs goalies if they become available.
EDM- Shawn Horcoff is being shopped around along with Sheldon Souray.
FLA- Dale Tallon is actively shopping Nathan Horton and Rostislav Olesz. Stephen Weiss and D-man Keith Ballard are attracting more interest.
BUF- GM Darcy Reiger has begun contract talks with defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman.
STL- Goalie Chris Mason and the Blues have started negotiating a contract. Mason, who is 34 could be commanding a long-term deal in the $4 million range.
WAS- Agent Don Meehan, who represents Jose Theodore has said that they have not talked contracts with the Capitals.
CBJ- Willing to shop 4th overall pick this draft, could be used in a trade for Jason Spezza?

NHL- The "Hockey for Haiti" initiative has raised over $1 million to help rebuild a Haitian Hospital

TBL- Aftering rejecting the offer from the Blue Jackets, Guy Boucher (coach of AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs) has accepted the position of head coach for the Lightning.
PHX- Jerry Reinsdorf has withdrawn his attempt to purchase the Coyotes. This leaves Ice Edge Holdings as the last buyer remaining.
ATL- Sign pending UFA, F Jim Slater
PIT- Sign F Nick Johnson to a one-year, 2-way contract worth $500,000
EDM- Lawyers for G Nikolai Khabibulin will ask for impaired driving charges to be thrown out as he was told to perform a sobriety test with a bad back.
OTT- Chris Neil reportedly owes $2.4 million to creditors.
DET- Close to announcing long-term extension for GM Ken Holland and assistant GM Jim Nill.
DET- Bertuzzi has been offered a 2-year contract.
SCF- Michael Leighton will get the start tonight as the Flyers face elimination.
NJD- Michel Therrien and John MacLean are the favorites for the coaching position with the Devils. 2 options that are no longer in the running are Mike Keenan and Craig MacTavish.
CAL- Flames are trying to sign D Ian White. The two sides are far apart so far.

KHL- St Petersburg has offered Ilya Kovalchuk a $14 million/year contract for 3 years.

BOS- Sign Dennis Seidenberg to a 4-year $13 million contract.
CMB- Jackets extend offer to Guy Boucher (Hamilton Bulldogs coach, AHL) to take over head coaching duties.
CAR- GM Jim Rutherford doesn't expect to have 38-year old Ray Whitney signed by July 1st.
NJD- Rumoured to be talking to Michel Therrien about coaching position and offering Kovalchuk a multi-year deal as well as the 'C'
TOR- Kaberle sweepstakes update: Washington, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, LA Kings, Buffalo, and New Jersey.
OTT- Spezza expected to be moved, percentage up to 75%. There is a rumour our there saying Spezza for Bostons 2nd overall pick this draft. Oilers, Sabres, Stars and Kings also in on the talks.
WAS- Rumoured deal that Semin will highlight a 5 player deal that will have a goalie come back to Washington who everyone would consider "untouchable."
SJS- Marleau will be gunned after by the Kings, Montreal, Buffalo and Ottawa. The Sharks will also try to re-sign Marleau for a hometown discount.
WAS- San Jose and Calgary are both interested in the services of goalie Jose Theodore.
OTT- Red Wings, Devils, Islanders and Caps are all in on the services of Anton Volchenkov.
EDM- Sheldon Souray might be on his way to San Jose, depending on if Rob Blake decides to retire. The Sharks are reported to offer up Kent Huskins and Torrie Mitchell. New Jersey is also in on Souray.
TOR- Nikolai Kulemin wants 1st line money, Brian Burke will let him walk if this is the case.


KHL- 45 year old Dominik Hasek has signed a 1-year contract with Spartak Moscow of the KHL.

Paul Henderson jersey bid update, 25 bids, top bid $211,000. Auction closes June 22.

DET- Tomas Holmstrom agress to a 2 year- $3.75 million deal
BOS- Sign forward Shawn Thornton to a 2 year- $1.6.25 million deal
COL- Avalanche sign G Peter Budaj and David Koci to one-year deals
OTT- Jason Spezza is not happy about GM Brian Murray going public and telling them about what he said in his player-exit interview after the season. Murray says he will consult Spezza prior to July 1st on what he thinks the Sens should go after.
PHI- Councilman Matt Drozd has issues a proclamation asking for statewide support of the Flyers. He wants Pens fans to join the Flyers bandwagon...

CBC- Ron MacLean helped rescue a man from the Delaware River while having lunch with Don Cherry. A woman came running up asking for help, MacLean ran down and used a velvet rope to help get the guy out of the water.
VERSUS- Game 3 recorded a 3.1 national HH rating and 3.6 million viewers. This is now the "highest-rated and most-watched telecast ever in network history." The previous high was Game 4 between the Pens and Wings of last years Cup finals.

NYI- John Tavares diagnosed with stress fracture in right foot after blocking a shot at the WHC last month.
OTT- Jason Spezza and Sens GM Bryan Murray are and will continue to discuss Spezzas happiness with the Sens. The Sens would be happy to move him but at the $7 million price, it will be quite hard to find a suiter.
EDM- GM Steve Tambellini won't reveal his draft plans. There are talks that he might trade the pick to the Bruins.
CAR- Rod Brind'Amour has expressed him interest in coming back for the final year of his contract, but the Hurricanes are considering buying out his contract.
ANA- Sheldon Brookbank re-signs for 2 years.

AHL- Calder Cup Finals is set, the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals affiliate) and the Texas Stars (Dallas Stars affiliate) will do battle for the cup.
NHL- Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, Phoenix's Shane Doan and Buffalo's Ryan Miller are the finalists for the Mark Messier NHL leadership award.
NHL- Gm's recommend an automatic game ejection for head-shots

MON- Elected to not renew contracts on 6 amateur/pro scouts
STL- Former player Scott Mellanby has joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Mellanby was a scout for the Canucks.
TAM- Kevin Dineen believed to be the front runner for Lightning head coaching job
COL- Av's GM Greg Sherman expected to speak to Joe Sakic about joining the management team
DAL- GM Joe Nieuwendyk plans to stick to a $45 million budget next year.


HARTFORD- Former Whalers owner trying to get interest back in the city and hopes to get a team one day. Howard Baldwin is making an outdoor skating rink and the Rentschler Field Sports and Entertainment Stadium.
